£300K In Refurbishments of Two Darlington Pubs
11 April 2017
Work began this week on the refurbishment of The Wheatsheaf, which will be closed until 21st August. The modernisation of the pub will broaden its appeal transforming it into a great family friendly dining pub offering all-day food, coffee and Sky sports. 10 jobs will be created as a result.
The Wheatsheaf will be completely refurbished inside and out and refurnished throughout in a warm traditional style. A new extended open kitchen with purpose built carvery is being installed allowing customers to see their food being prepared. The function room will also be redecorated.
The large lounge will be revamped with a new bar and comfortable booth and high-level seating to cater for different groups. New French doors are being installed at the rear of the pub leading to a newly laid lawn seating area with picnic benches for alfresco eating and dining.
The pub will open from 10.00 am serving light breakfasts and barista style coffee and tea. Light bites, snacks and sandwiches will be available all day as well as lunch and dinner.
Food at The Wheatsheaf will all be freshly prepared with a carvery on Sundays. The menu will also feature Teeside’s Chicken Parmo and pub classics such as freshly made speciality pies, steaks and fish & chips as well as The Wheatsheaf’s signature burger with a choice of home-made sauces. There will also be a chef’s board featuring seasonal dishes and specials and a good children’s menu.
The plans for The George include a complete internal and external refurbishment of the tired community pub to bring it up to date and improve facilities for customers.
Phil Barkley, D&G Pub Company area manager said: “Offering breakfasts, real coffee and snacks alongside wholesome fresh home-cooked food in a comfortable environment will broaden the pub’s appeal to everyone from families to local businesses wanting to hold informal meetings outside the office.”
Gary Corney, operations & sales director at Star Pubs & Bars said: “HEINEKEN is a passionate supporter of great pubs so we’re delighted to be investing in Darlington and working with the D&G Pub Company to upgrade The Wheatsheaf and The George in line with pub goer’s changing needs whilst retaining the spirit of the great traditional pub.”
