£337,000 investment ensures new lease of life for The Station

A town centre landmark for many years, The Station in Bishop Auckland had been crying out for a new lease of life to broaden its appeal to shoppers and families.

Step forward local businesswoman Cheryl Jeffrey, who had been waiting for the right opportunity to make the leap from retail to hospitality. When she heard that The Station was set to benefit from our investment, she seized the chance to transform the venue into a family-friendly local.

Doing so required a comprehensive £337,000 overhaul of the pub inside and out. Full length windows have created a light, welcoming environment which features an open plan bar and separate dining area, while the pub is now the only one on the high street serving a comprehensive range of fresh home-cooked food, including a children’s menu.

The modern, industrial look includes a contemporary upcycled timber and metal bar, exposed brick and wood clad walls and industrial lighting, with the bar itself serving a new cocktail menu, a wide range of gins and eight lagers on tap.

Outside, a sleek new grey and white colour scheme has been introduced along with a welcoming decked seating area.

Four new jobs have been created by the pub’s revitalisation and Cheryl said: “The Station is very different from everything else in Bishop Auckland and the investment will help with the regeneration of the town centre.

“As well as attracting a new clientele it’s still a place where regulars can feel at home, while everyone can enjoy our home-cooked food, whether that’s a burger while they watch a match or bringing the family in for tea.  Having listened to people in the town, I’ve made sure we’ve got an authentic Parmo on the menu too!”

Gary Corney, Regional Operations Director for Star Pubs & Bars said:  “We’re delighted that Cheryl has taken on The Station. She’s run her own shop and worked in pubs, so has a keen understanding of customer service, which is key to running a great community pub.  Coupled with that, our investment has created a great local unmatched on the high street.”
