Soldiers March To Cricket Victory

19th June 2013

Cries of 'Army, Army' replaced the more familiar battle cry of 'Barmy Army' when a team of serving soldiers won the HEINEKEN-sponsored 2013 Inter -Services Twenty20 cricket tournament at Lords.

Reigning Twenty20 champions Royal Air Force have dominated the competition in recent years but the Army team, led by Lt Cpl Jacques Prinsloo, swept aside the RAF challenge in the opening match of the triangular tournament in an excellent 48-run win.

That margin of victory was bettered when the Army met the Royal Navy in the deciding match, thanks to a fine 93-run partnership from their middle order batsmen Ian Massey (54) and Sherwin Govender (45).

Nigel Pollard, HEINEKEN Head of External Communications, said: “We enjoy a rich history of supporting Britain’s Armed Services which, in recent years, has included fund-raising activities for Help for Heroes and providing a cold beer for servicemen and women on the long flight home from overseas operations.

“We are especially delighted that, for the second year, cash raised by IST20 will benefit Combat Stress, supporting the excellent work the military charity does to assist suffering service veterans in the UK.”
