John Smith's Saddles Up For A Summer Of Top Racing

14th June 2013

The John Smith’s racing calendar is starting to heat up for the summer with high profile race meetings at Newcastle, Uttoxeter and York.

The first of three high profile races running under the banner of the UK’s No 1 ale brand is the Northumberland Plate, which takes place in Newcastle on 30 June. A highlight of the racing calendar in the North, this flat horse race forms the centre piece of the 3 day festival at the racecourse and is the richest 2 mile handicap in Europe.

Hot on the hooves of the Northumberland Plate, comes the John Smith’s Summer Cup at Uttoxeter on 1 July. Viewed as one of the racecourse’s feature days, the Staffordshire circuit offers one of the best dual jump tracks in the country.

John Smith’s racing sponsorship programme then moves to York Racecourse where the 53rd John Smith’s Cup will take place on July 14. The cup, which is the longest running sponsorship in flat racing in the world, is firmly established as a must-see event that attracts around 40,000 people to the beautiful Knavesmire course.

Karen Crowley – Senior Brand Manager, John Smith’s at HEINEKEN said, “Over the past decade, the brand’s racing portfolio has grown to encompass a wide variety of flat and jump race sponsorships. John Smith’s has become synonymous with horse racing over the years and we are extremely proud of the role the brand plays in bringing ‘The Sport of Kings’ closer to trade customers, licensees and consumers.”

John Smith’s has been the title sponsor of the Grand National at Aintree since 2005. More than 90 No Nonsense race days are held throughout the year at almost 30 jump and flat racecourses across the UK. For further information on John Smith’s racing fixtures, visit the website at
