Star Pubs & Bars invests £230k in a ruddy good pub for Ruddington

26th February 2014

Star Pubs & Bars, HEINEKEN's pub business, is investing £230K in a complete refurbishment of The Jolly Farmers in Ruddington transforming it into what it believes will be one of the best food pubs in the area offering great cask ale and coffee. A further £60K is being invested in fixtures and fittings by the new lessee of the pub, experienced chef and pub operator, Mark Anderson.

Work on the pub began this week and will take seven weeks to complete. It will re-open as The Ruddington Arms in time for Easter creating 10-15 new jobs.

Funds are being spent on a complete overhaul of the interior and exterior of the pub, including the creation a stylish front lounge area with a new feature fire and the reconfiguration of the back bar, adding new wooden floors and butchers block tables with high seating. The former function room at the rear of the pub is being turned into a large kitchen to cater for the increased quality and quantity of food being served and the current kitchen will become a seating area.

The outside of the pub will also benefit from a facelift with fixed seating, new fencing and the creation of a sheltered area.

Says Mark: "I’d been looking for a pub to take on for some time. The moment I saw The Ruddington Arms and the village, I knew it was the place for me. All the pub lacked was investment and some tender loving care, which it will now have. I’m really looking forward to becoming part of the community and using my experience in some of the UK’s leading restaurants to create an excellent pub for all. The ingredients we’ll use will be local and seasonal and the dishes, simple, yet exciting and affordable. I’m passionate about great British pubs, so much so I’m creating the Ruddy Good brand for the beers, wines and pickles as a testament to the village pub and, of course, Ruddington itself!"

Says Chris Jowsey, trading director of Star Pubs & Bars: "We're delighted that an experienced operator like Mark has taken on The Ruddington Arms and that together we are investing in its long term future.

"It's tough running a pub with increasing competition for consumer's disposable income. To be successful in today's market, pubs must improve their offering to customers and this means investing in pubs like The Ruddington Arms to create a welcoming and relevant environment for all customers.

"HEINEKEN is a passionate supporter of the great British pub. We have invested £600m purchasing and improving our Star Pubs & Bars estate since 2010 and this year will be investing more than ever in our pubs. We now own around 1,285 pubs like The Ruddington Arms, the majority of which are operated by small independent businesses. What we need is real investment, innovation and professionalism in the pub sector to continue to attract customers back to the great British pub."

The investment in Ruddington follows a further £550K invested by Star Pubs & Bars in Nottinghamshire pubs in 2013.
