Seaton Pub Given New Lease of Life and New Name Following a Major Refurbishment

19th March 2014

The Famous George in Seaton re-opened this week as The Malt House, following a major £123K investment from Star Pubs & Bars, HEINEKEN's pub business, and additional funding for fixtures and fittings from new lessees David Gibson and Tanya Davies, transforming the pub into what they believe will be one of the best food pubs in the area offering great cask ale, excellent food, teas and coffee.

The investment has been spent turning the run down 'spit and sawdust' drinkers' pub into a good quality traditional pub. A stylish lounge area with fire and comfortable booths and freestanding seating have been added along with a new bar and upgraded toilets and disabled access.

The outside of The Malt House has also benefited from a facelift with new signage and a complete redecoration. It's prominent position has meant the town square itself has a smarter, brighter appearance.

The pub has been closed for seven weeks while work was carried out and as a result of the refurbishment three new jobs have been created.

The Malt House, which was previously run by temporary managers, has been taken on by new lessees, David and Tanya, who bring with them a wealth of experience and a passion for high standards, which they had already started introducing in the weeks leading up to the refurbishment. David is an experienced chef, while Tanya has extensive front-of-house practice. Prior to taking on The Malt House the couple spent over 10 years running pubs in the South from Torquay to Surrey before settling in Seaton.

Says Tanya: "From the moment David and I saw The Malt House, we fell in love with it. We could see that all the pub lacked was investment and some tender loving care. With Star Pubs & Bars support we're now able to provide the community with a great pub offering excellent quality and great value food as well as daily special offers.

"As well as installing a brand new kitchen, we've also installed HEINEKEN's Smart Dispense system, which produces consistent superior quality beer. We're the first pub in the South West to have this new technology.

"We'll also be showing Sky sports so sports fans can enjoy watching their favourite games in a comfortable and welcoming environment."

The food on offer includes traditional favourites, such as a Sunday roast with homemade Yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes, gammon and eggs and homemade beef burgers, as well a more Mediterranean selection of dishes, from Falafel, Hummus & Salsa Flat Bread to Stuffed Chicken With pepper, feta, ricotta, pesto topped tomato and garlic sauce with spinach and roasted butternut squash.

Says Chris Jowsey, trading director of Star Pubs & Bars: "We're delighted that experienced operators like David and Tanya have taken on The Malt House and that together we are investing in its long term future.

"It's tough running a pub with increasing competition for consumer's disposable income. To be successful in today's market, pubs must improve their offering to customers and this means investing in pubs like The Malt House to create a welcoming and relevant environment for all customers.

“HEINEKEN is a passionate supporter of the great British pub. We have invested £600m purchasing and improving our Star Pubs & Bars estate since 2010 and this year will be investing more than ever in our pubs. We now own around 1,250 pubs like The Malt House, the majority of which are operated by small independent businesses. What we need is real investment, innovation and professionalism in the pub sector to continue to attract customers back to the great British pub."
