The Milbourne Arms To Get a New Lease of Life with £107k Investment

19th March 2014

Work began this week at The Milbourne Arms in Holywell, where Star Pubs & Bars, HEINEKEN's pub business, is investing £80K in a complete refurbishment of the pub, transforming it into an outstanding country pub known for its excellent food and cask ale. A further £27k is being invested in new fixtures and fittings by the pub's lessee, Sue Peters.

Funds are being spent on a complete overhaul of the interior and exterior décor to bring it up to the standard of the much admired award winning gardens. As well as smartening and updating the interior, a new catering kitchen is being installed to allow the pub to offer food for the first time.

The Milbourne Arms will be closed for three weeks, re-opening on 3rd April with food starting on the 7th April. As a result of the refurbishment the pub will now open from 12.00 noon to 11.00 and on Friday and Saturdays from 12.00 till 12.00 offering lunch, afternoon teas and coffees. Staff hours are being increased to cater for the increase in trade and two chefs positions are being created.

The food on offer at the pub will be good quality traditional pub food with a specials board featuring dishes with seasonal ingredients like game. A selection of teas, lattes, cappuccinos, hot chocolate and cakes and pastries will also be available to villagers, walkers and other visitors.

Says Sue "I fell in love with The Milbourne Arms the moment I saw it as I could see its potential. I've been here for almost a year and a half and now feel like a villager. The village is lovely and very welcoming. What the village has lacked and what people are always saying to me it needs is a great traditional pub offering good food. I've listened and am determined to create the pub the village wants. I've already improved standards and created a great outdoor area, which won a Northumberland in Bloom award last year. But this was as far as I could go alone. With Star Pubs & Bars support, I'm now able to take The Milbourne Arms to the next level, upgrading the interior so the inside of the pub is in of the same quality as the exterior.

"Once I offer good home cooked food, I believe the pub will become more family oriented. I'm hoping mothers will bring in their children for a good wholesome tea. We'll still keep our entertainment on a Saturday night as we're now attracting quality acts and word is spreading, with customers coming some distance. Holywell deserves and will have a pub to be proud of – I promise."

Says Chris Jowsey, trading director of Star Pubs & Bars: "We're delighted to be helping Sue turn around The Milbourne Arms and give Holywell a proper country inn providing some of the best pub food and beer in the area.

"It's tough running a pub with increasing competition for consumer's disposable income. To be successful in today's market, pubs must improve their offering to customers and this means investing in pubs like The Milbourne Arms to create a welcoming and relevant environment for all customers.

"HEINEKEN is a passionate supporter of the great British pub. We have invested £600m purchasing and improving our Star Pubs & Bars estate since 2010 and this year will be investing more than ever in our pubs. We now own around 1,285 pubs like The Milbourne Arms, the majority of which are operated by small independent businesses. What we need is real investment, innovation and professionalism in the pub sector to continue to attract customers back to the great British pub."
