Fish Club restaurant owners take on Star Pubs & Bars pub

Fish Club restaurant owners, Steve Orme, James Thomson and Jack Sutton are taking on their first pub, the Red Lion in Shepperton, a Star Pubs & Bars site located on the River Thames.

Together with Star Pubs & Bars they are spending £500K transforming the pub into a fantastic food led family pub.

Work on the pub began this week and will take seven weeks to complete. Funds are being spent on a complete overhaul of the interior and exterior of the pub to enhance the pub’s features whilst opening it up to create a fresh modern more usable space. Improvements will include the reconfiguration of the interior to provide a relaxed drinking and ad-hoc eating area and a separate dining area with seating for 50. Phase two will commence next spring with a fantastic new river garden with its own bar and kitchen.

For Steve and James taking on the lease of the Red Lion has particular significance as they were brought up in Shepperton, met one another at the Thamesmead Secondary School and before setting off around the world to learn their trade.

The Fish Club, their restaurant business operates two very successful combined restaurant and fish shops in Clapham, voted by Time Out magazine as in the top 50 restaurants in London.

Says Steve: "We know The Red Lion, the area and the people well and really care about its future. It's in a great location on the Thames and when we saw the lease was available and that Star Pubs & Bars was prepared to invest in improving the pub, bringing it up to date and to the high standard we would want, we knew we could create a pub which people in the area would love. If we hadn't been able to lease The Red Lion, it would have been difficult for us to raise the funds needed to take on a pub like this in such a fantastic position.

“We're going to run a food led family pub which offers a selection of affordable seasonal dishes from our regularly changing menu. We shall also have bar favourites such as scotch eggs, sausage rolls and Red Lion scratching. The weekends will kick off with Saturday brunch, from eggs Benedict to full English, with the Red lion Bloody Mary on hand to clear that Friday night fuzz. Sunday's will be all about the roast!

"As with our Fish Club restaurants in Clapham, which Time Out has said are in their top 50 in London, everything will be made fresh on the premises from our bread to our icecream. We're bringing the same focus on quality ingredients and excellent service to The Red Lion.

“We'll have a website up and running in a few weeks in the meantime people can follow the progress at the pub through twitter @rlionshepperton. We already have a following of 50 and that's before we’ve even started work on the site!"
