HEINEKEN RECOGNISED BY BUSINESS IN THE COMMUNITY FOR EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

Business in the Community (BiTC) has awarded HEINEKEN UK the CommunityMark in addition to our continued Platinum Big Tick status - the highest Corporate Responsibility Index ranking.

The CommunityMark recognises leadership and excellence in community investment. It is assessed and awarded by BitC and incorporates 360 feedback from colleagues and community partners. HEINEKEN is one of just 44 companies to be recognised through the CommunityMark.

The Corporate Responsibility Index (CRI) considers four main areas; community, environment, workplace and marketplace.

HEINEKEN’s community investment is extensive – from supporting independent alcohol education charity Drinkwaware, to investing in sustainable development in Herefordshire through the Bulmer Foundation.

HEINEKEN also received re-accreditation in the ASDA Enterprise Growth Award category for their Star Pubs & Bars estate. HEINEKEN’s award winning lessee support programme is designed to help Star Pubs & Bars lessees’ grow their businesses, which in turn has a positive effect on their local communities. HEINEKEN believes a sure foundation is critical to the long-term success of SMEs and has invested heavily in first year support programmes and business planning so businesses are established on a firm footing. All companies receiving the CommunityMark and Platinum Big Tick status will be recognised at BiTC’s annual Gala Dinner in July in the presence of their President, HRH The Prince of Wales.

Case Study: Addaction

HEINEKEN has been partners with alcohol misuse charity Addaction for almost a decade. By supporting Addaction to develop pilot projects in communities across the UK, we enable Addaction to trial and evaluate innovative approaches to tackling alcohol ham.

The West Glasgow Over 50s project is an example of a project established through our partnership. Older problem drinkers often get overlooked by society. They can often be isolated, have little awareness of help available, and their problems can have a significant impact on both their families and health and social care services. The Over-50s service aimed to improve the well-being of these “invisible drinkers” by reaching out to older people in West Glasgow to help them reduce or stop their drinking.

The pilot was a success, with service users showing 70% improved physical health; 83% reduced or stopped drug/alcohol use; 75% improved mental health; 66% increased social/training/employment activity; and 71% improved relationships with friends/family. Addaction are currently bidding to receive £25 million of Big Lottery funding to roll out a similar service for over-50s nationwide.

Case Study: The Moss Gardens Project

HEINEKEN supports a range of community projects local to each of our eight sites across the UK. In Moss Side, home to our Manchester brewery, HEINEKEN supports the Moss Gardens Project.

The Moss Gardens Project is a grass-roots project based on the site of a derelict bus depot. Local residents have re-purposed the land to create a community garden and transformed a decommissioned bus into a community meeting space. HEINEKEN has supported the group by donating cider apple trees and mixed fruit trees from our orchards in Herefordshire and continue to work with the local community to transform the site through signage, garden furniture and local publicity.
