MUSSELBURGH SET TO REGAIN A PUB THANKS TO £305,000 INVESTMENT

3 January 2020

Musselburgh is getting a new pub specialising in great food thanks to a £305,000 investment by HEINEKEN-owned Star Pubs & Bars and experienced business operator Anna Brudnowska.

The new Muss Bar & Kitchen will be on the town’s High Street on the site of the former Habaneros Mexican takeaway, which closed two years ago. The venue was last a pub in 2016.

Work starts on 6th January and Muss Bar & Kitchen is scheduled to open in mid-March, creating 14 new jobs. The family-friendly pub will cater for all occasions, from morning coffee and light lunches to celebratory special occasion meals and evening cocktails.

The project will upgrade the outside of the building and install large café-style windows at the front. With a shortage of pub gardens in Musselburgh, a beautifully landscaped garden will be added at the rear with seating for 70, an outdoor bar and festoon lighting. Covers and heaters will enable year-round use.

The building’s interior will undergo a similar transformation. Whilst original features will be retained, it will have a stylish contemporary design. The plans include a bar, relaxed seating and informal dining areas, plus a new kitchen and toilets.

Muss Bar & Kitchen will use seasonal produce locally sourced from East Lothian farms and Musselburgh’s butchers and fishmonger. Says Anna: “My aim is to bring something different to the town: a very varied menu offering restaurant-quality food but at pub prices.” Muss Bar & Kitchen will serve food all day, opening at 8.30am at weekends for breakfast and brunch. Its extensive drinks range will span barista-quality coffee, craft beers, carefully selected wines and plenty of alcohol-free and sugar-free options, as well as premium cocktails inspired by Scotland’s top cocktail bars.

Says Anna, who also runs Edinburgh’s only whisky and haggis pub, Arcade Bar: “I receive hundreds of emails about vacant pubs and never normally look at them but for some reason opened one about this site. I love Musselburgh, so it piqued my interest. I got a really good feeling when I walked in and immediately recognised the building’s potential. The garden was overgrown but sold me. It’s sad to see a closed pub, and it’s fantastic to bring this one back to life. I want to give the whole place the wow factor.”

Comments Star Pubs & Bars’ area manager for East Lothian, Jeremy Williams: “With so many people moving into the area and so much new housing, there is the demand for more great quality pubs, and Musselburgh is in for a treat with this one. Anna is a highly talented licensee with real creative flair. Having a popular pub in Edinburgh, she knows what excellence looks like and will deliver it at Muss Bar & Kitchen. We wish her every success.”
