The King’s Head, Wells to reopen early May
4 March 2020
The Kings Head on the High Street in Wells is to reopen early May after four years closure following a major £560,000 refurbishment by Heineken owned, Star Pubs & Bars. The investment will create 12 new jobs and see The King’s Head transformed into a top-end family-friendly high street pub offering food and coffee, broadening its appeal to local residents, workers and tourists.
Building work starts on 2nd March with funds being spent on a complete internal and external sympathetic overhaul of the historic pub designed to bring it into the 21st century, enhance its character and improve comfort for customers.
Inside the pub, there will be seating for 84 in two back-to-back bars with a midsection with the medieval timbered vaulted ceiling where live music will be shown and a big screen for key sporting events. Above will be a raised gallery with tables and chairs and upstairs a sports area where customers can play SMART darts. The room will also be available for hire.
Outside a secret courtyard garden is being created with 12 covers, and a partially covered Pergola with festoon lighting to add to the ambience.
A new kitchen is being fitted allowing the pub to serve good quality pub classics such as cod & chips, burgers and salads and a cracking Sunday lunch as well as vegan and vegetarian dishes, sharing platters and a children’s menu with special kid-sized cutlery and crockery.
Food will be served from 12noon. The pub will also serve barista-style coffee throughout the day.
Drinks-wise, The King’s Head will have four cask ales, premium and craft beers and ciders, including Orchard Thieves, Beavertown, Amstel and Birra Moretti, alongside draught cider, top quality wines and spirits and a cocktail menu.
New licensees John Anthony and Mihaly Serger are relocating from Brighton to take on The King’s Head. With many years’ experience in hospitality between them, they are looking forward to taking on such a prominent site.
John said: “We’ve been looking for the right pub for the last five years. When we saw The King’s Head, we fell in love with it and the city and knew it was where we wanted to put down roots. We’re looking forward to moving to Wells and are excited to become part of the community and the custodians of this historic prominent venue known to many generations. We’ll be opening early May with a local live band.”
John and Mihaly’s plans for The King’s Head include hosting a pub quiz, showing live Sky sports, and live music at weekends.
Matthew Dyson, Regional Operations Director for Star Pubs & Bars said: “We’re delighted to have found John and Mihaly to take on The King’s Head and to be breaking ground on this much-wanted refurbishment, allowing the pub to reopen.
“Offering sports and live entertainment as well as a great selection of premium drinks, it will be different from anything else on the high street.
“The combination of experienced operators, a strong local economy with tourism growing year-on-year are all positive for the area and for The King’s Head. I wish John and Mihaly well with this new venture.”
