The White Bear in Knutsford to undergo a £200,000 upgrade
4 November 2021
The White Bear on Canute Place in Knutsford is to close from end of service on 24th October until week commencing 22nd November (open in time for the Christmas lights) for a major £200,000 refurbishment by HEINEKEN owned Star Pubs & Bars & Bars1 and new licensees Jamie Whittaker and Kelly Vickers. The investment and introduction of food will they believe create the best family-friendly local and best beer garden in town. 10 jobs are to be created on the back of the investment.
Outside, an alfresco eating and drinking area is being created with seating for 60 on a mix of deep cushioned low chairs, cushion covered tub chairs and high wooden bar stools. A pergola, architectural mirrors and festoon lighting add to the ambience, whilst a wood burner will make it an area to enjoy all year long.
Inside seating is also being increased to 86. The traditional character of the pub is being retained whilst creating a softer lighter look and feel. Feature wallpaper and more soft furnishings including fabric covered and leather armchairs and upgraded toilets will make The White Bear a more welcoming and comfortable environment in which to relax.
The kitchen is being overhauled as part of the refurbishment with equipment fitted to enable it to offer food for the first time. The menu will consist of pub classics with a twist – pan seared treacled salmon, Guinness and black roasted lamb shank or salt n pepper slow roasted pressed belly pork.
Drinks wise, The White Bear will offer an extensive selection of premium spirits and wines, plus a wide choice of craft beers and quality coffee
Jamie and Kelly’s plans for The White Bear are to host acoustic live music at weekends and wine tasting and wine matching evenings to broaden the pub’s appeal. They will also host a weekly quiz with a difference. Held late afternoon on a Sunday, it will be a family friendly interactive quiz with questions for children.
Kelly says: “We both love Knutsford, it’s such a beautiful town and could immediately see the potential of The White Bear. It’s like a country pub transplanted into the town. We noticed there wasn’t much choice for families in the town itself as we have an eight-year-old ourselves and so aim to create the most family friendly upmarket pub in town. Having a good-sized beer garden will we hope make it even more appealing, especially when the weather is so glorious as it has been recently.
“We’re really looking forward to getting involved in the community. We are keen to sponsor a local football team in Knutsford and will be putting out feelers when the pub reopens.”
Star Pubs & Bars Business Development Manager, Andrew North says: “We’re delighted Jamie and Kelly have taken on the lease of The White Bear. They’ve got a great track record having turned around another family friendly local outside Manchester in the last few years, leading to it being awarded five out of five stars on Trip Advisor.
“The pub is in a great town centre location with a new housing development in walking distance. It’s position and our joint investment together with Jamie and Kelly at the helm, will give The White Bear a new lease of life.”
The refurbishment at The white Bear is part of a £38m investment that Star Pubs & Bars is making in more than 700 pubs in 2021.
