Gone are the halcyon days of long, unplanned catch-ups with mates and impromptu pub trips. According to new research, the typical Brit hasn’t done anything spontaneous for a full 80 days.
The data from Sevillian lager brand Cruzcampo reveals Britain is experiencing a spontaneity crisis, with over a quarter (28%) of Brits saying they never, or very rarely, say yes to last-minute plans, and almost one in five (18%) admitting they have never done something just for the hell of it.
These days the calendar is king, with the average Brit preferring to make plans a whole 10 days in advance. It’s a sorry state of affairs, especially when over half (58%) of us admit we regret turning down a last-minute invite.
Taking inspiration from its relaxed roots in sunny Seville, Cruzcampo is on a mission to get Brits to stop saying no and start saying YOLÉ: the Sevillian take on YOLO.
Enlisting the help of TV personality and renowned ‘yes man’, Sam Thompson, the lager brand is giving away thousands of free pints to routine-driven Brits. But there’s a catch - anyone wanting a free, icy-cold pint of Cruz needs to get to the pub with a mate within 48 hours.*
Not drinking? Not a problem – the offer extends to a range of alcohol-free options, so there’s really no excuse not to show. The incentive aims to bring a little Sevillian spontaneity to the UK, helping the 84% of Brits who feel beholden to their regular routine.
The data also reveals the true extent of the nation’s plan-paralysis. Nearly one in five (18%) Brits feel totally trapped in an unforgiving daily regimen, with no room for unplanned activities. Almost half (40%) wouldn’t consider themselves spontaneous, with the top reasons cited for shunning last-minute plans including preferring to plan ahead (23%), an already packed schedule (17%) and a lack of energy (15%). More than one in ten (14%) say it’s anxiety that’s holding them back – rising to one in five (20%) Gen Zs.
But despite their apparent inability to go with the flow, almost two thirds of Brits say they wish they were more spontaneous (61%), while a further two thirds (63%) worry about what they’ll miss out on by turning down a last-minute invite.
Doing their bit to revive the lost art of true spontaneity, Cruzcampo is also giving away a three-day all-expenses-paid trip to Seville to one lucky winner. But they’ll need to be willing to say YOLÉ, drop everything and go immediately (stopping off to pick up a passport and a pal, of course).**
Chief YOLÉ Officer Sam Thompson says:
“What is it they say…spontaneity is the spice of life! I’m challenging the nation to throw caution to the wind and grab a pint with a mate tonight – without checking the calendar. It’s time to be less NO-lé and more YOLÉ!”
Veronica Sica, Marketing Director for Beer at Heineken said: “At Cruzcampo we understand just how easy it is to get caught up in the everyday. We hope that by bringing a little Sevillian spontaneity to the UK Brits will feel brave enough to Choose to Cruz and embrace a little un-planned joy – because more often than not, that’s where the best memories are made.”
